Quip about "odious Yankees" in Maine Bicentennial Exhibition @ TPL

On April 4, 1820, a southern gentleman named Henry Putnam wrote a long letter describing Brunswick, Maine to a friend back home in Charleston, South Carolina. Maine had been a state for less than a month.

In his many letters Putnam admitted that he expected to find "odious Yankees" in his travels, which included Portland, Topsham, Durham, Bath, Wiscasset and Hallowell. He was surprised to find the people in Maine to be "intelligent, enterprising and industrious..."
